All hail the queen! Last week, we discovered who was crowned Belgium’s Next Drag Superstar, as the stunning Alvilda snatched the crown on season two of Drag Race Belgium. Hailing from Nivelles, her drag name was inspired by the legendary Scandinavian female pirate Awilda. Alvida is a performer in Cabaret Mademoiselle, a show created by Drag Race Belgium season one queen Mademoiselle Boop and season two contestant La Veuve. During her time on Drag Race Belgium, she placed in the top four for six consecutive episodes – a feat only accomplished by a select few, including Jinkx Monsoon, Keiona, and Ginger Johnson.

We chatted with this talented actor, performer, and Makeup artist about her experience on the show, and we put her in the hot seat for the Socialite Seven. Get to know this newly crowned member of the Drag Race Hall of Fame.

Congratulations on the win! What was your reaction when you found out you were cast on the show?
I was really happy and excited. It was a dream come true to be part of the Drag Race world. After the call ended, I sat on the floor for about 10 minutes to let it sink in.

What was the biggest challenge for you?
It was clearly the sewing challenge. I knew from the beginning that this would be hard for me. I literally have two left hands, so I’m not good at manual stuff. And having the sewing challenge that early in the competition with the perspective of being the first eliminated really doubled my fears. I’m so glad that we had a really good sisterhood and despite the competition, we always gave each other advice or some help to bring the best that we can to the challenges.

What was your favorite thing about the season?
I have two things that come to mind – the sisterhood we created with the other queens and when my boyfriend came for the makeover challenge.

Did you discover anything surprising about yourself while on the show?
Yes, I discovered that I can exceed my limits much more than I thought. Drag Race really is the Survivor of drag and now, knowing that I can do all of that, I have less fear and more confidence in my art and my skills.

If you could go back and do anything over, would you?
I don’t think so. I like my run on the show how it is – with all the ups and downs.

How did you get your start in drag?
I discovered drag through Drag Race but I originally didn’t think that was for me. A friend of mine wanted to go in drag during Pride in Bruxelles and he wanted me to go in drag with him. I agreed to, but just for fun. During Pride, we met some established queens who told us to come perform during their beginner’s night. I refused, but my friend wanted to do it, and he wanted me to go with him so he wouldn’t be alone. So, I ended up doing it and I really, really enjoyed it. I felt so free and empowered. It was the crossroad of all my passions (music, dance, performance and makeup). After the beginner’s night, the boss of the bar said to me that I wasn’t good enough to do drag so I thought that it was over for me, but Mademoiselle Boop saw my performance and really liked it, so she asked me to come and join her cabaret. And the rest is history!

How would you describe your style?
I like to describe myself as The Beauty and The Beast. I love to explore with my drag. From club kid clown to femme fatale.

What can fans expect when they see you perform live?
A fierce performance with a lot of dance, humour, and lot of skin showing.

What’s your number one beauty tip?
Prepping your skin really well makes 50% of your makeup!

What’s next for you?
On Monday April 1st, I will join Sasha Velour on stage for her Big Reveal live show in Bruxelles. I also want to be able to go to schools to be able to talk about prevention education and sexual health. Lastly, I hope to be able to go on tour and see the world!

When did you know that you wanted to become a performer?
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be on stage. At first I did it as a comedian, and then it shifted to drag.

Who has had the biggest influence on your career and why?
I have two artists that really influence me – Jean-Michel Basquiat and Sasha Velour.
Basquiat because I really love his art and aesthetic, and Sasha Velour because she literally saved my life. I discovered her in season nine during a really hard time in my life  and seeing her put so much meaning in her drag was really life changing for me. Through Drag Race she told me that it was ok to be different, ok to be free and to assume who I really am. I got a Tattoo on my chest in her honor so I can remind myself of that every day when I see myself in the mirror.

What is your favorite song to perform?
I really love to perform “Ba$$in” from Yelle. This song always brings me joy.

Who would you want to play you in the movie of your life?
That’s a tough one! I cannot think of a male actor to play me, I don’t know why. So, I’ll say Sophia Bush and Jessica Lange.

What superpower or talent would you like to wake up with tomorrow?
I would love to have the ability to fly or to teleport. I also would have loved to be able to sing! In my dreams, I am Beyoncé.

What are three things you can’t live without?
I can’t live without music, my family and friends – and also without drag.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
It was given to me by a burlesque performer here in Bruxelles (Colette Colerette). I was worried about whether the number would go wrong or not as planned, and she told me that it was me and only me who decided to do the number, it was my will to be on stage and express myself that way. So, I had to find the joy and the desire that made me want to do this in the first place and if something doesn’t go as planned, to play with it because it’s in those moments that something even better may happen.
