Beyoncé is normally the high-priestess of big, bouncy, pumped-up hair. Her ‘Texan hair’, which she debuted at this year’s Super Bowl, is proof of that, as her hair was teased into a volume-packed, country cowgirl blowout reminiscent of Dolly Parton or the ’80s cast of Dallas.

But in a sharp detour from her recent platinum blonde look, Beyoncé revealed not one, but two new hairstyles as a teaser for her forthcoming cover shoot with CR Fashion Book. “Hair is actually the first step when I’m creating tours, films, and albums; being able to see the hairstyles first is what influences the sound, looks…everything,” she told the magazine.

In an Instagram post shared on 29 February, the Texas Hold ‘Em singer can be seen with a salt and pepper mullet, where the longer, darker lengths are swept over one shoulder. Her Makeup-ideas” target=”_blank”>monochrome makeup leans towards a neutral rose, which she matched to her eyes, lips and cheeks. She has also paired the look with a corset and a graffitied T-shirt, spray-painted with the lyrics “She looks a mess” from her song Heated on the back.

A post on CR Fashion Book’s Instagram shared this quote from Bey: “I always wanted an asymmetrical cut in the ’90s, but my mother wouldn’t let me do it. So I’m having the time of my life at this shoot.”

In another post, the mood is more whimsical as Beyoncé can be seen with rust-red, waist-skimming pre-Raphaelite curls. A pair of beige briefs, calve-length socks and an off-the-shoulder top with detached tulle sleeves completes the dreamy look.

These playful hair transformations reflect how Beyoncé uses her hair as a form of self-expression and shines a spotlight on her new haircare line, Cécred (shipping to the UK starts from £12.20).

The big question on our lips is: “Will Act III see Beyoncé in her rock ‘n’ roll era?”. With Queen Bey, anything is possible.
