We’ve seen the rise of the wolf cut, the butterfly cut and the jellyfish cut, but a new animal chop will steal the crown for 2024. Enter, the ‘kitty cut’.

The style is emerging as an antidote to the mega-shaggy, ultra-layered styles that took off over 2020, 2021 and 2022. Plus, it pairs nicely with the cropped direction hair trends are going in (since the bob climbed back on top this year) – only it offers the benefit of a tiny bit more length and versatility.

What is the kitty cut?

A sleeker take on animal cuts (like the wolf cut and cub cut), the kitty cut is less shaggy, but still offers up subtle, sophisticated layers to give hair structure and movement. With the length falling between the shoulders and collarbone, it’s shorter than The Rachel, but longer than a bob. The key is that it blends delicately cascading layers with a sultry cropped length – it’s polished, but also sexy and feline.

How to wear the kitty cut?

The key is to cut in longer layers, with the longest only a centimetre or so shorter than the the base length. Then, add softly-ascending layers through the back and around the face, without taking any too short and choppy (hence edging into shag territory). Around the face, optional extra swooping layers can add framing – consider cheekbone-length curtain fringes and jaw-length pieces.

As for texture, the cut can work on straight, wavy and Curly hair. With curls, a curl by curl cut will ensure the chop is perfectly tailored to you. Styling-wise we’ve seen the chop worn air-dried and au naturale, blow-dried and voluminous, half-waved and the teensiest bit mussed up and side-flipped for added oomph.
