Les is thought to have first been asked to take part during his time on Coronation Street, but was first to turn it down.

A source told The Mail On Sunday: “The viewers are going to love Les. He is a TV icon and now he will be dancing on one of the most popular shows around.

“He might be about to turn 70 but he is a showman and he will be great entertainment for those watching at home. There is genuine excitement about Les taking part.”

Les might be well known as an actor, but he can dance – and he’s currently touring with the West End production of the musical 42nd Street.

Les, who was once married to Amanda Holden, is best known for presenting Family Fortunes from 1987 to 2001.

He appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2002 whilst his marriage to Amanda Holden was breaking down.

And he also played Michael Rodwell in Coronation Street from 2014- 2016.

The next series of the BBC hit is expected to launch in September with a number of stars already signed up.

The Sun exclusively revealed that ex Coronation Street star Ellie Leach would be on the bill following her exit from the soap.

Her addition to the line-up, which has yet to be confirmed by the BBC, will see the show sign up the “full soap set” as it’s already set to include former Emmerdale actor Adam Thomas, 34, as well as EastEnders’ Bobby Brazier, 20, who is the late Jade Goody’s son.

We also told how former newsreader Angela Rippon is in talks to waltz in to Strictly at the age of 78 — making her the show’s oldest contestant yet.

Angela has plenty of dance form having hosted the previous incarnation of the BBC show between 1988 and 1991, then returning in 1998 before it ended.

The BBC declined to comment.
