‘Painting Pictures’ Rapper Superstar Pride Charged w/ First Degree Murder After Surrendering To Authorities

Another rapper is potentially facing a long time behind bars.

According to a local Tennessee news station, Memphis artist Superstar Pride, best known for his viral song “Painting Pictures,” was arrested and charged with first-degree murder earlier today (July 20th).

The report states the 21-year-old was wanted in connection to a shooting that took place yesterday (July 19th) around 12:30 p.m.

Reportedly, authorities responded to a “call for service” at a home on Highway 35 in Panola County and discovered the body of 40-year-old Marcus Wheatley. Police said Wheatley died from a fatal gunshot wound, and that an investigation into his death led to Cadarrius “Superstar” Pride, being a suspect.

Subsequently, authorities put in place a fugitive search for the rising musician. It wasn’t long before Pride surrendered himself to the police, however. Panola County Chief Deputy Reginald Lantern stated that his office was contacted by family members of the young rapper, who expressed that he wanted to turn himself over to authorities. At 4:47 p.m., Pride was reportedly taken into custody and transferred to the Panola County Detention Center. He was charged with first-degree murder, and a bond has not been set for him at the time.

Pride joins a long list of rappers who continue to get caught up in the realities of street life. As we’ve been covering, rapper YNM Melly is currently facing the death penalty due to a double homicide charge. While Chicago rapper G-Herbo also found himself behind bars recently, though for a significantly more minor offense. The “Ridin Wit It” artist posted bail quickly after being arrested for illegal gun possession in the Midwest city.

It seems no matter the success, young rappers continue to find it difficult to separate themselves from the dangers of gang activity. In his song “Painting Pictures,” which has more than 27 million views on Youtube, Pride speaks about this directly, rapping:

“All the shiesty sh*t that I’ve done, blessed to not be in no chains”

We will continue to update as more of the story unfolds.
