“I’m the first to admit when I make a mistake. I simply never do.” That’s the philosophy of tyrannical French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix in an historic epic that reunites him with Gladiator filmmaker Ridley Scott.
The first official trailer for the film, written by Scott’s All the Money in the World screenwriter David Scarpa, is rife with expansive battlefield scenes amidst the French Revolution and Bonaparte’s rise to Emperor in 1804, as well as a burgeoning romance with Joséphine (played by Vanessa Kirby), Bonaparte’s eventual wife. The project centers on “Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile Relationship with his one true love, Joséphine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed,” according to the studio.
Phoenix and Kirby star alongside Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras, Ben Miles as Caulaincourt, Ludivine Sagnier as Theresa Cabarrus, Matthew Needham as Lucien Bonaparte, Youssef Kerkour as Marshal Davout, Phil Cornwell as Sanson ‘The Bourreau,’ Edouard Philipponnat as Tsar Alexander, Paul Rhys as Talleyrand, John Hollingworth as Marshall Ney, Gavin Spokes as Moulins and Mark Bonnar as Jean-Andoche Junot.
“Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by,” Scott told Deadline in 2021 of his forthcoming biopic. “He came out of nowhere to rule everything—but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process.”
Napoleon will be released theatrically on Nov. 22, 2023 by Sony Pictures and then stream on Apple TV+ at a later Date.
