Lady Gaga famously takes fairly extreme steps to commit to her roles while working on a movie, and that appears to be the case for Joker: Folie a Deux.

The 37-year-old “Applause” pop star is set to portray Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix‘s Joker in the sequel to his 2019 blockbuster.

During a recent interview, cinematographer Larry Sher explained that Mother Monster didn’t want to go by Lady Gaga or her birth name Stefani Germanotta on set. He revealed what she preferred to go by and how changing her name impacted their relationship.

While on The Trenches TV, Larry said that he thought Gaga hated him when they first started working together.

“I feel like I never really even met her, even during the Makeup hair test,” he said. “And then I remember for like a week being like, ‘God I feel like we were disconnecting, not even connecting. We’re like on opposites.’ And I would say to my crew like, ‘Jesus I can’t crack it. I feel like she either hates me or we hate each other or there’s something weird going on here.’”

Larry noted that he was calling her Stefani until he got some advice: “Then the AD at one point said, ‘Oh you know Stef would like if you just called her Lee on set.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, 100%.’ And then I literally said like the next thing I said was something Lee, and it was like everything changes.”

“From that point on it was like our whole connection changed,” he added.

Where does Lee come from? It might be a nickname for Harley? We’ll have to wait and see if we get more information to confirm!

We got a lot of photos of Gaga in costume while she was working on the movie, which has already wrapped.

If you forgot, Gaga also was very committed to her role in House of Gucci. She revealed that she spoke in her Italian accent for nine months straight.
