Dallas String Quartet releases their classical crossover cover of Miley Cyrus’ smash hit song, “Flowers.”

Ion Zanca, founder of Dallas String Quartet explains, “‘Flowers’ has a simple and beautiful melody that everyone can relate to and enjoy. The rhythm is catchy, and the harmonic structure reminds me of a classical piece. The beautiful, lush sound of the strings was perfect for this arrangement. I love the idea of having a contrasting writing style that could cater to classical music Lovers as well as pop music enthusiasts. We start the piece with a choral similar to the chamber music style and soon after switch to a more pop sound with drums, bass, and guitar. This contrast back and forth provides listeners with a unique sound and is open for interpretation.”

Made up of violist Ion Zanca, violinists Valory Hight and Melissa Priller, and bassist Young Heo, Dallas String Quartet, aka DSQ or DSQ Electric, is an American Classical Crossover ensemble founded by Ion Zanca. DSQ merges contemporary classical and pop music into what has been called “Bach meets Bon Jovi.”

Utilizing both traditional and electric strings, DSQ performs as a quartet with the full accompaniment of drums and guitar and are known for their renditions of everything from Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to Shawn Mendes to Camila Cabello’s “Señorita” to their collaboration, “You Are The Reason,” with The Piano Guys.

DSQ has performed for Presidents Obama and Bush, the College Football Playoffs, NBA, and NFL organizations, and their cover of Katy Perry’s “Firework” was featured on the most recent season of American Idol.

In October of 2021, their album Love Always debuted at #2 on the Billboard Chart. DSQ is also featured on the 2023 GRAMMY-nominated album, The Passenger by Cheryl B. Engelhardt.

“Flowers” opens on light, sparkling tones, laced with a gorgeous violin, and then shifts to a modern pop-flavored rhythm topped by delicious layers of strings, sweeping across the sonic setting on expressive leitmotifs, at once elegant and rippling with sumptuous coloration.

The thumping kick drum and fat rolling bassline blend perfectly with the lush strings, giving the tune an alluring flow.

Dallas String Quartet has it going on! “Flowers” simultaneously delivers swanky waves of classical savors and compelling pop zest.
