Yellowjackets’ Creators Discuss Season 3

“Yellowjackets” season two is just getting underway, with chaos, strange cults, and even cannibalism. But if that’s not enough action for you, you’re in luck: the show has already been renewed for season three.

Back in December 2022, Showtime confirmed that the drama will, indeed, return for a third season. That’s great news since the show’s creators, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, have planned for the story of the ill-fated New Jersey soccer champs to be told over the course of five seasons.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on March 20, Lyle and Nickerson said they’ve already turned their attention to their show’s third season. That’s partially because of the looming threat of a writers’ strike (the Writers Guild of America is currently bargaining for a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). “The possibility of the strike is very real. All we can do is keep moving forward until we have to put our pencils down,” Lyle said. She added that the writers’ room will begin officially meeting in April. Nickerson added, “We hope to take a little one at the top of the summer. Otherwise, we might die.”

Season two of “Yellowjackets” had a pretty tight timeline between filming and its air Date, as it just wrapped in February. If season three isn’t disrupted by a writers’ strike, that means it’ll likely premiere sometime in 2024.

Lyle also told THR that Showtime is interested in a spinoff of the show, saying, “We’re aware that it’s something they’re interested in, and we certainly aren’t closed off to the idea.” “It would have to make sense,” she added. “We have a Couple of ideas.” Fans will have to wait and see what happens on that front.

If “Yellowjackets” does make it to all five seasons, some of the cast have joked about just how messed up their characters will be by then. “We are the trauma timeline,” Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays teen Taissa, told Entertainment Weekly in March of the scenes set in the ’90s after the plane crash. “It’s simply going to get worse and worse. I don’t know how we’ll be standing by season five.”

Viewers know the Yellowjackets survivors ultimately spend 19 months in the wilderness, and the beginning of season two offered some of our first flashes of their lives immediately after they’re rescued. It’s possible future seasons will dive into that time, too, but for now, that’s a waiting game.
