The exciting news was announced at the Disney 2023 Annual Meeting of Shareholders Webcast on April 3 by Dwayne Johnson, who is reprising his role as Maui. Dwayne will also produce the new film alongside Auli’i Carvalho, who voiced Moana in the animated feature.

“Humbled to say we’re bringing #MOANA’s beautiful story to the live action big screen!” Dwayne tweeted when the news was announced. “#MAUI changed my life (miss you grandpa) and I’m honored to partner with @DisneyStudios to tell our story thru the realm of music & dance, which at the core is who we are as Polynesian people.”

Disney fans are so excited that their favorites from Moana are being brought to life on the big screen. The 2016 animated film grossed over $640 million worldwide and was nominated for two Academy Awards. Disney just did live-action remakes of Cruella and Pinocchio, with Peter Pan & Wendy, The Little Mermaid, and Snow White on deck. We can’t wait to see how Disney’s live-action spin on Moana turns out. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film.

With the exception of Dwayne Johnson, there’s been no casting announcements for the remake yet. Auli’i Cravalho is serving as a producer, but it’s unclear if she’ll reprise her role from the animated movie, like Dwayne is doing. Auli’i told HollywoodLife in an EXCLUSIVE interview in March 2020 that she’d gladly play Moana for a live-action remake. “The film came out when I was sixteen and I am nineteen now. I would be more than happy to see someone else play that role, and if it were to fall to me I would do my absolute best as possible,” she said.

Any of the Moana voice cast could return for the remake. The cast included Rachel House as Tala, Temuera Morrison as Sui, Jermaine Clement as Tomatoa, Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, and Alan Tudyk as Heihei. John Musker and Ron Celements directed the animated movie, but the director for the remake hasn’t been announced.

Disney hasn’t shared any details about the story of the Moana live-action remake. But we can expect the film to be similar to the plot of the animated film. Moana is set in ancient Polynesia, and follows a coastal village chief’s young daughter named Moana, who is chosen by the ocean to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. During her adventure, Moana helps save the legendary demigod Maui from his island prison, and together they search for Te Fiti to save the other village people. The film also features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and others.
