Sorority Members Sue University of Wyoming for Accepting Trans Woman Into Kappa Kappa Gamma House

The University of Wyoming is being sued by its sorority members after accepting a transgender woman.

According to a lawsuit obtained by the Associated Press, seven sorority sisters from the Kappa Kappa Gamma house claim that the new admittee made them uncomfortable on many occasions.

Both the institution and new member Artemis Langford, 21, who joined their chapter in September 2022, are being sued by the women, who declined to be identified in the lawsuit.

It is alleged in the lawsuit that Langford – who is referred to as Terry Smith in the suit – stared at the women for hours without speaking, making them uncomfortable.

“One sorority member walked down the hall to take a shower, wearing only a towel.  She felt an unsettling presence, turned, and saw Mr. Smith watching her silently,” the lawsuit alleges.

Kappa Kappa Gamma, its president, and the new member allegedly pushed the local chapter to violate sorority rules.

When asked to induct Langford into the house, the women said they felt “intimidated.”

“An adult human male does not become a woman just because he tells others that he has a female ‘gender identity’ and behaves in what he believes to be a stereotypically female manner,” the lawsuit claims.

The sorority’s executive director, Kari Kittrell Poole, has refuted the women’s allegations.

Without going into detail, Poole told the Associated Press that the complaint “contains numerous false allegations.”

She added that the sorority does not discriminate based on gender identity.

The lawsuit claims that Langford frequently acted inappropriately in front of her sorority sisters, including once when she “had an erection visible through his leggings.”

“Other times, he has had a pillow in his lap,” the lawsuit adds.  “Smith [Langford] repeatedly questioned the women about what vaginas look like, Breast cup size, whether women were considering breast reductions and Birth Control.”

According to the plaintiffs, the sorority ignored its bylaws when inducting Langford. Instead, it referred to a 2018 “Guide for Supporting Our LGBTQIA+ Members” that asserted Kappa Kappa Gamma was a “single-gender” organization.

The manual also states that it welcomes “women” and “individuals who identify as women.”

The women request that Langford’s Kappa Kappa Gamma membership be revoked and that unspecified damages be awarded.
