Since moving back to the US in 2020, Meghan Markle has continued the work she began before her royal days in advocating for women and girls through her charity work. She also built a friendship with Gloria Steinem, the legendary activist and a founder of the Ms. Foundation for Women. This year, the two friends will reunite at the foundation’s 50th anniversary gala in New York City, when Steinem presents the duchess with a Women of Vision Award, which has previously gone to luminaries including Hillary Clinton, Ava DuVernay, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Diane von Furstenberg.
On May 16, she will be honored alongside reproductive justice advocates Wanda Irving and Kimberly Inez McGuire, and LaTosha Brown, a political strategist and founder of Black Voters Matter. 16-year-old trans activist Rebekah Bruesehoff will receive the Free to Be You and Me Award, which honors young activists, and Olivia Julianna, an activist with Gen Z for Change who fundraised more than $2 million for abortion funds across the nation after she was insulted by Congressman Matt Gaetz last year, will receive a Marie C. Wilson Emerging Leader Award.
“We are thrilled to announce this year’s honorees for the Women of Vision Awards and to celebrate 50 years of progress and power,” said Teresa C. Younger, President and CEO of the Ms. Foundation. “Meghan, LaTosha, Wanda, Kimberly, Olivia, and Rebekah are incredible leaders and we are grateful to be able to shine a light on their many accomplishments and tireless work on behalf of gender and racial equity across the country and the world.”
Since Meghan and Prince Harry founded Archewell in 2020, its foundation arm has directed support and grants to numerous charities supporting women and girls, including Girls Inc., Paid Leave for All, Moms First, the National Women’s Law Center, and Smart Works, which was a patronage of Meghan’s while she served as a senior royal. They also provided support to the Georgetown University Law Center’s Initiative on Gender Justice, which develops policy solutions for schools, hospitals, the juvenile justice system, and other public systems.
The gala will take place at Manhattan’s Ziegfeld Ballroom 10 days after the coronation of King Charles III. Though Harry visited the UK last week to attend pretrial hearings in a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, the Couple has not yet announced whether they plan to attend any of the events over the coronation weekend. Last month, they confirmed that they had received an email invitation to the coronation ceremony.
