Whoever said you couldn’t reinvent a song you previously released was certainly wrong as Bassjackers do not mess about with their newly released single, “Wrong or Right (The Riddle)”. The original is actually a 1984 hit by English singer-songwriter, Nik Kershaw, which became a global chart hit reaching number three in the UK, Ireland, and Portugal. Many artists have gone on to release covers of the song including Gigi D’Agostino, Jack Holiday & Mike Candys, and Prezioso & Marvin. This reinvention of their viral hit track follows the Bassbrain remix of Bassjackers’ track “Forever Young” and their recently-released EP, titled “Les Pays Bass“.
Bassjackers are a dance producer and DJ duo consisting of Marlon Flohr and Ralph van Hilst. They officially formed in 2007, and soon made their mark on the music industry, dropping the dancefloor hit “Mush Mush” which was then picked up by Tiësto and released on his label Musical Freedom. The track was a success on Beatport, landing inside the top 10 and staying there for two months. Since then, the duo have gone from strength to strength, dominating the electronic dance scene and collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry including Martin Garrix, Afrojack, KSHMR, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, R3HAB, and Showtek. On top of that, they’ve gone on to remix for Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias, Moby, and Ne-Yo. Their most-streamed track on Spotify is “Fireflies” featuring Luciana, which was released on Spinnin’ Records and has 42.6 million streams. They’ve also appeared in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs since 2015 and currently sit at their highest placement to Date at number 27 in 2022. They continue to make waves in the EDM world, and we’re excited to see what 2023 brings to this exciting DJ and producing duo.
The Bassjackers’ original version, titled “The Riddle”, was released in 2018 via Smash The House, and has 39 million streams, to date. The track is purely instrumental which is in direct contrast to their brand new single, “Wrong or Right (The Riddle)”. From the get-go, it’s clear they’ve spotlighted the whistle, transforming the pace, giving it a progressive festival sound with organic instruments which add a softer undertone at the beginning. Marlon Flohr and Ralph van Hilst showcase their devotion to the track by adding meaningful lyrics that effortlessly translate the beat of the track into words that are sure to become a staple on dancefloors around the world – we’ve originally been lost to the sound for many years, now we have relatable lyrics we can sing along to with meaning. This all leads up to one epic drop, allowing Bassjackers to do what they do best, throwing in an unforgettable bassline whilst keeping the whistle sound poignant throughout. However, that’s not all, Bassjackers surprise listeners halfway through, by slowing the melody down and giving us lyrics about how, after deciding to end a Relationship, they come back around due to the love that they have. The addictive chorus kicks back in with a fired-up emphasis on how both a song and a person can have an overpowering, atmospheric effect on you, and you never quite know if it’s wrong or right – although musically it’s never a problem whereas Relationships can either be wholesome or toxic. Our addiction to this song really has no bounds and we can see this becoming a fan-favourite and placing highly on party and festival playlists as summer starts to roll in.
Talking about the track, the Bassjackers said: “[The melody of ‘The Riddle’] has always been one of our favorites, and this is our second remake of it. The first one is a festival banger with almost 40 million streams on Spotify alone. This time we upped the ante by writing our own vocals to it and have it revolve more around that epic whistle.”
